Abstract :

Keeping stroke patients safe in an acute hospital setting is a challenge for nursing staff. Patients who have experienced strokes often have physical and cognitive deficits that often lead to behaviors that can cause the patient (or others) harm. These behaviors include the risk of falling, elopement and confusion that might lead to physical harm to staff, loved ones or the patient. This presentation seeks to present various interventions to increase patient safety and to give staff psychological tools and safety devices to assist in keeping patients safe and comfortable. These tools are being utilized successful on an acute neurology/ neurosurgery floor at a large academic hospital.

Biography :

Michael Langston is an Assistant Nurse Manager on an Acute Care Neurology and Neurosurgery floor, as well as, the Six Sigma Black Belt for Surgery Service at UNC hospitals. He has over two decades of licensed counseling experience and over 7 years as a Registered Nurse. He has several publications over the years, reviews articles in a peer reviewed journal and has taught at various universities and colleges.
