Abstract :

Incidence and severity of natural or man-made disasters is increasing, especially in Asian countries. Nurses often have to respond to the disaster events and work in the first line. Therefore nursesâ?? disaster competence and motivation to engage in disaster management. However, relationship between nursesâ?? disaster nursing competence and motivation of disaster engagement was not fully studied. Purposes of this study were to understand level of and relationship between nursesâ?? disaster nursing competence, anticipatory disaster stress, and motivation of disaster engagement in Taiwan. This study was a cross-sectional survey. 90 nurses from eight hospitals in southern Taiwan participated in the study by completing a set of questionnaires including the disaster nursing competence questionnaire, anticipatory disaster stress questionnaire, Litwin and Stringerâ??s organizational climate questionnaire and the motivation of disaster engagement questionnaire. Results showed that hospital nurses did not have high level of the measured variables. Anticipatory disaster stress was negatively correlated with disaster nursing competence and motivation of disaster engagement. Disaster nursing competence and willingness to join hospital disaster rescue could predict individualsâ?? motivation of disaster engagement. To improve disaster nursing competence and motivation of disaster engagement, we suggest designing disaster education plans to increase nursesâ?? motivation of engagement in disaster events.
