Abstract :

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review different treatment modalities used for the treatment of OKC and comparison between them for successful outcome. Patients and methods: All cases of OKC reported in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Punjab Govemment Dental College and Hospital, Amritsar, were undertaken for the treatment. A total of 47 reported cases were diagnosed as cystic lesions out of which 13 cases were identified as OKC. Out of these 8 were treated with enucleation with primary closure or with open packing and 4 were treated with marsuplisation followed by enucleation. Only 1 case was treated by enucleation with peripheral ostectomy. Results: All the patients with biopsy proven OKC ranged in the age from 10 years to 60 years. There were 3 female and 10 male patients. The choice of treatment approach was based on the age of the patient, size of cyst, recurrence status and radiographic evidence of cortical perforation and proximity to vital structures. All the patients were treated successfully with no recurrences seen during the follow up period of 1 to 4 years. Conclusion: Proper diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment modality is very essential for the desired outcome.
