Abstract :

For children undergoing medical procedures, to reduce children’s fear and anxieties, nurses practice various types of patient care related to pay adequate attention to providing psychological preparation when involved with children and their families. The online workshops were conducted with the aims of: interpreting the meaning of the responses of children and their families, reflecting on daily nursing practice, exchanging information on nursing practice provided at other hospitals, and helping participants to promote ethical nursing practices in pediatric nursing, by using the pediatric nursing care model (PNCM). Objective: To hold online workshops using a pediatric nursing care model demonstrating the basic attitudes towards ethical practice of nursing, and investigated nurses’ implementation rate and likelihood of PNCM items at the workshops. Methods: 9 pediatric nurses working at medical institutions in Japan were participated with informed consent. A 1.5-hour online workshop was held two times for 2 weeks. The implementation rate of 24 items of PNCM were investigated at the first workshop and the likelihood were investigated at the end of the second workshops for observation of nurses’ changes. Results: A comparison of the percentage of participants who reported “Always” showed that the likelihood has increased in almost items of PNCM. In the case of the implementation rate of [You greet children, introduce yourself, and inform them that you are the nurse in charge.] , the percentage of participants who reported “Always” was 55% at first workshop, but the percentage among “Always possible to implementation“ was increased to 100% at the second workshop. Conclusion: As a result of this online workshops using PNCM, the original goals were accomplished. Furthermore, the results showed the positive outcome of the workshops. We would like to hold more workshops by improving its content and methods.

Biography :

The pediatric nursing care model (PNCM) developed from 1997 survey, briefly describes representative examples of ethical nursing practices for pediatric patients (and their families) undergoing examinations and procedures. In 2001, a sample of nurses was provided descriptions of PNCM and was asked to try it during their own work. Results indicated that nurses’ awareness of a need to "explain at the level of a child" was improved both at 3- and 6-months post-intervention (Matsumori et al., 2006). A model defining 24 nursing approaches as PNCM was developed based on the original version (Matsumori, 2016).
