Abstract :

Abstract : Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory mucosal skin disorder. Its etiopathogenesis has been the target of much controversy. The skin lesions are relatively transient while the lesions in the oral cavity seem to persist longer with a potential for malignant transformation, especially for the erosive form. Although the etiopathology of OLP is still unknown, a significant body of evidence has supported a central role of immune dysregulation in the pathogenesis of LPO. In the immune system, cytokines are powerful regulators and play a role in controlling the orientation, extent, and innate and adapted immune responses. Abundant production of cytokines can lead to the appearance of deficiency, allergy, autoimmunity, inflammation, which are involved in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory phenomena, such as oral lichen planus. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the role of these inflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus and their role in predicting the potential for malignant transformation of oral lichen planus.
