Abstract :

The study was carried out basing on the topic “Factors influencing adherence to anti-retroviral in prevention of mother to – child HIV transmission among women in Kawempe Hospital, Kampala - Uganda.” The objectives were: to determine the knowledge of awareness of pregnant women, to determine the attitude of pregnant women towards obtaining PMTCT of HIV services and to determine accessibility to anti- retroviral. The study employed a cross sectional design due to limited time. This was done through use of a selfadministered questionnaire for quantitative data collection from Kawempe Women’s Hospital and sample size of 200 pregnant women Females had a high percentage of attendance at the facility compared to males because some men sent their wives to collect medicines on their behalf and respondents between 25-39 years participated mostly because there were in their reproductive stages and sexually active thus increased risk of HIV. Most of them were aware that HIV can be transmitted from mother to the child through breast feeding and blood supply through the placenta. Respondents had a positive attitude towards PMTCT of HIV services as they helped them to minimize chances of giving birth to babies with HIV. All of the respondents had access to antiretroviral but however were being affected with distance, age and language barrier. In conclusion there are a range of factors that influence women’s positivity on PMTCT service utilization such as limited knowledge about HIV, lack of partner and family support, unfriendly service from health facility, distance, language barrier and age. Recommendations: Strengthening community awareness on HIV, engaging male involvement in PMTCT care and getting friendly service were the key determinants for better PMTCT service utilization.
