Abstract :

Plastic is not an issue, but their management is a very big issue. Plastic effects the environment, mainly marine life. India generates 26,000 tons of plastics every day. Whether we realize it or not, almost all products contain plastic. Mostly, all products of plastic are single use and they create harm to the environment. According to reports, the annual plastic production worldwide is 359 million tons, but the plastic waste generated is300 million tons. Plastic waste weight is more than human population. Plastics find their use in every sector owing to their durability, low cost and versatility and have become an integral part of the global economy. Societies waste is generated, but only a few percentages of this waste is recycled and the remaining find its way into the various ecosystems thereby harming the environment and life. Plastics deteriorate the environment and thus its disposal has gained critical attention. The world needs a transition from linear economy to a robust circular economy in terms of plastic waste management so as to have more sustainable resource management. In a circular economy, plastics are used and reused for a longer duration while extracting the maximum value from them and finally recover inland regenerating products at the end of their service life. Apart from reuse ad recycling of plastics, various technological innovations and interventions, like diverting plastics to roan construction, plastic to alternative fuel, plastic as raw material in cement kilns, plastic topavement blocks or tiles, conversion of PET bottles waste into textile products and likewise can help reduce plastic waste thereby plummeting environmental and health impacts. Thus, plastics if brought into circular economy would ensure a sustainable and a resource efficient future. This presentation aimed at understanding the plastic waste management through effective recycling process for the betterment of the world.

Biography :

Dr. S. Ravichandran is currently working as Professor in Department of Chemistry at Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, Punjab (INDIA). He completed his Ph.D. in 2006 from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai (Tamilnadu) and M.Sc. from Pondicherry University, Pondicherry. He has qualified in GATE with a score of 95 percentile conducted by Ministry of Human Research and Development in the year 1998. He has 17 years of Research experience and published 120 International papers. He has published 5 Textbooks and received Bharat Shiksha Ratan award, Lifetime achievement award and Life Time Education Excellence National awards from Global society in New Delhi. His area of research work is: Synthesis of Mannich and Schiff bases with metal ions like Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn (II). Structural characterization using spectroscopic techniques like UV-Vis., IR, 1H NMR, CV, Chromatography and EPR. His current interest is to focus on the development of novel greener methodology for a Sustainable Development.
