Abstract :

Background: Patient safety is essential to high quality healthcare. Medical teams, especially nurses and physicians require specific basic skills to maintain safe care. These are already defined in various learning objectives for the health professions. Yet, there are no evidence based, interprofessional training program for developing these skills exists. Aim: The study has following aim: In order to improve patient safety, a need-based, multimodal and interprofessional training program for nurses and physicians will be developed, along with implementation and evaluation in clinical practice. Methodology: The training program consists of two parts: an eLearning module that enables individual and self-regulated learning, as well as an interprofessional team training regarding the topics: teamwork, error management and patient involvement. This complex intervention will be evaluated in 36 hospital units within the regions all around Germany. The intervention involves three groups: group A receives eLearning, group B receives eLearning combined with deepened behaviorbased, interprofessional team training and group C (waiting control group) receives intervention only after completion of data collection. Effects of this complex intervention will be evaluated by staff surveys at four measurement times. Results: First results are expected in summer 2018 (baseline). We hypothesize that group B has the most improved patient safety skills to maintain safe care due to participating in the multimodal training compared with group A and group C.
