In vitro antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts from various antifeedant plants viz., Calotropis gigantea R.Br, Ricines communis L, Aristolochia bracteolate were investigated. The crude methanol extracts were tested against the human ophthalmic pathogens viz., E.coil, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus epidermis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella, Pneumoniae, Streptococcus vividins, Proteus sp. Acinitobacter and urinary tract infectious bacterial pathogens viz., Pseudomonas sp, Enterobacter sp, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus sp . and antibiotic resistant pathogens (ABR) viz., Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus epidermis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Extract from leaf of chosen plant species have maximum inhibitory activity against most of the above used bacterial strains with the measured zone of inhibition. Among the plant species tested, the crude methanol extract of Calotropis have significant effect against the bacterial pathogens. Further investigation has been undertaken to isolate the active ingredients. Based on their feeding deterrent and toxic properties, some of these plant extracts have potential for use as alternative treatment for different types of human diseases such as ophthalmic, Urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistant bacterial diseases etc.
