Abstract :

Contemporary dentistry essentially constitutes optimum balance of esthetics chiefly; White & Pink. White esthetics is often within control of Dentist and Lab. Pink esthetics relies wholly upon balance between clinician and patient as a team. Relationship between periodontium and restoration is intimate. Optimum gingival health pre – prosthetic or pre – restorative work is one key factor of paramount importance for adequate clinical success & longevity of prosthesis/restoration. Biologic width describes the combined heights of the connective tissue and epithelial attachments to a tooth. The dimensions of the attachment were described in 1961 by Garguilo, Wentz and Orban. The primary significance of biologic width to the clinician is its importance relative to the position of the restorative margins, and its impact on post-surgical tissue position. Once this width is invaded, one of the two tissues usually gives in; either gingival / alveolar bone resulting in recession or bone loss. As clinician, concept of biologic width is challenging to understand and implement in restorative/prosthetic workflow. For long term success, optimum integration of perio-restorative interface is crucial. The presentation aims to review and discuss clinical concepts of biologic width and its maintenance. It will contemplate clinically relevant key points while dealing around/in the biologic width proximity. It will briefly outline the measures to be taken with the aim to preserve the integrity of delicate periodontium complex at marginal interface, to ensure most favourable clinical long term successful outcome during daily dentistry.
