Abstract :

Increase in the awareness of the generic medicines available in the Indian market, as they are often less expensive than the brand-name drugs. For this study, two different drugs for diabetes were chosen namely Glimepiride and Metformin Hydrochloride which are highly available in the market and also mostly prescribed by the physician. Glimepiride belongs to the class of sulfonylureas, and metformin hydrochloride belongs to the class of biguanides, A comparison study of antidiabetic drugs was carried out, e.g., The analytical perspective mentions the use of UV-Vis spectrophotometer for the assay purpose of the drugs used for both generic and brand-name drugs. Assay of these drugs when compared showed that they have the same percentage of active pharmaceutical ingredients as claimed either by branded generic or brand-name drug. The analytical parameters such as linearity, accuracy, precision and robustness were also performed to check the method validation for the utilised procedure. Optical parameters such as beers lamberts law, standard deviation, %Relative standard deviation (%rsd) were accomplished for the Glimepiride and Metformin Hydrochloride. The % rsd of Glimepiride and Metformin Hydrochloride was 8.18% and 0.18% respectively for generic drugs, 7.60% and 0.017% respectively for Brand- Name drugs which determines the quality of the drugs was not compromised. This definitely represents that the generic medications which are regulated by USFDA, CDSCO, WHO can be substituted for the Brand name drugs by the physician. This can help a lot of consumers save money on different kinds of ailments like diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, cardiovascular, Parkinson's, migraine, vertigo etc.
