Abstract :

I have carried out a cross sectional survey study assessing TB-related knowledge, attitudes and practices among participants from outpatient department in Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre. For the study 50 patients from the outpatient department who have been previously diagnosed for tuberculosis were selected. The response of the subjects in the survey study was analysed in order to assess their knowledge and attitude towards TB before and after the counselling. Data was collected through self-filling of open as well as close-ended questionnaire from the subjects. The scores from the survey before the counselling revealed that 2% fell in the excellent category, 18% were in the above average category, 58% of the study population was confined to the average category, and only 22% had poor knowledge regarding the disease, its medications and attitudes towards tuberculosis. A review was done and the scores after the review revealed that, 10% of the patients fell in the excellent category, 58% of the study population fell in the above average category, and 32% of the patients had average knowledge about the disease and its medications. The effect of counselling was positive since no patients fell in the poor knowledge category.
