A Normative Observational Study of the Nasal sill in South-Indian Adults

Abstract :

Background: The nasal sill is a very important structure, that influences the aesthetics of a nose. During reconstruction of the nose, special attention must be paid to the nasal sill. Hence understanding the morphology of the nasal sill and its various types help to aid in effective repair and reconstruction of the nose. Although there are several researches on this structure and its variation, very few studies on the south Indian population have been published. Methods: • A sample of 250 adults of South India were taken. • Photographs of consenting adults will be taken in the basal view, and will be studied. • The studied photographs will be then classified under each type. • Statistical analysis is done to analyse the prevalence of each type. Results: Among 250 healthy adults with no known deformities from southern Indian states, it was found that 26% of them had type I, 47% had type II and 27% of them had type III. Clearly type II was the majority here. Conclusion: From this study it is apparent that the construction of a pointed nostril sill would be inappropriate in 47% of South Indian adults. Thus before correction of the nostril sill is undertaken it is recommended that a careful comparison should be made with the sill of the opposite side. References : 1. Irwin, M.S., Milling, M.A.P. Tanissha Sanjay Raj Kalpana., M.B.B.S., MRCS (Part A), GMC Registered Tanissha is a GMC-registered doctor and an M.B.B.S. graduate from Saveetha Medical College & Hospital, Chennai. She completed her internship in 2023 with rotations in surgery, emergency medicine, orthopaedics, ENT, anaesthetics, and gynaecology. Her UK clinical experience includes observerships in the NICU and surgical departments at Peterborough City Hospital and Newcastle. She has passed MRCS Part A and completed BSS, ATLS, and ALS training. A dedicated volunteer in women and child health, she aspires to pursue surgical specialty training in the UK.
