Novel Discoveries in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Editorial

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases & Disorders mainly deals with colon and small intestine inflammatory conditions, mainly Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and other related organs of the gastrointestinal system which is vital to good functioning of other systems thus to overall health of the humans.

Journal of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Disorders is a peerreviewed international journal that publishes scientific articles related to diagnosis, treatment and management of both Ulcerative Colitis and Crohns Disease. It also deals with medications, enterology tests and abnormalities of gastrointestinal system. There were many aspects of gastroenterology discussed in the previous issues which made a significant effect for enhancing the knowledge related to the journal.

Novel Discoveries in Diagnosis and Treatments

Having a retrospection of the journal, the authors have contributed their research work introducing new ways of diagnosis as well as treatment.

In the research article contributed by Aaty, et al. in Volume 5, issue 2, the authors state that colonoscopy was performed with an endoscope using a prototype of the Narrow Band Imaging. During the process, when a lesion is identified, the imaging mode was switched to NBI with recording the image and biopsy was taken from this area for histopathologial examination. The result was much more effective than a normal colonoscopy. The research concludes that Narrow band imaging colonoscopy is an easy method that adds value for the conventional colonoscopic evaluation of the patients suffering from ulcerative colitis. This procedure seems to provide additional information that might lead to further classification of the endoscopic activity rather than the active or inactive [1].

In the recent case report published in volume 5, issue 2 written by Jay Pravda et al, a Novel Combination Therapy was induced for complete mucosal healing as a one-time treatment of refractory Ulcerative Colitis. The authors conclude that, the available theoretical, experimental and clinical evidence implicating a causal role for colonocyte hydrogen peroxide in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis strongly suggest that the appropriate treatment should be aimed at restoration of colonic redox homeostasis by reduction of colonic hydrogen peroxide prior to considering long-term immunosuppression or immune modulation with biologics or other agents, which carries serious adverse effects and an increased risk of colon cancer [2].

In his short communication written by Hulya Uzunismail, he observed that he states that increased IgG-food antigen complexes due to increased food specific IgG antibodies can cause more mast cell activation. Elimination of these foods may help symptomatic improvement in patients with IBD and IBS by reducing the amount of immune complexes because of lack of the food antigen part of them [3].

Considering the diagnostic methods, authors Kyle J Fortinsky et al, explain the emerging role of endoscopic ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease. The review discusses the current evidence pertaining to EUS in IBD and possible future directions where EUS may be utilized both for diagnostic and therapeutic indications [4].

Galanopoulos M, in his case report explains that treating of anterior nodular scleritis with Topical Corticosteroids in a patient with Crohn’s Colitis, could be a reasonable therapeutic option for patients receiving an anti-TNF agent for subjacent inflammatory bowel disease, in order to avoid further immunosuppression with systemic anti-inflammatory drugs [5].
