A web service is a software service used to communicate between two devices on a network. More specifically, a web service is a software application whose standardized way of ensuring interoperability between disparate applications. It does this over HTTP using technologies such as XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI.

Web services are among the most important emerging technologies in the e-commerce, computer software and communications industries. Web service technologies will redefine the way businesses do business and exchange information in the 21st century. They will improve business efficiency by enabling dynamic provisioning of resources from a pool of distributed resources. Due to the importance of the field, there is a significant amount of research going on in the fields. At the same time, standards organizations are actively developing standards for web services. Web services are creating what will become one of the most important industries of the new century. The International Journal of Web Services Research (IJWSR) is designed to be a valuable resource providing cutting edge technologies, developments, ideas and trends to an international readership of researchers and engineers in the field of Web services.
