The editors of the Journal of Virology are during a privileged position to watch our field grow and develop. While the rational prediction of things to return is predicated on extrapolation of what we all know now, we cannot anticipate the surprises that result from the serendipity of research. The discoveries emanating from virology within the past 50 years are simply astounding, and few of them could are predicted or maybe imagined supported prior knowledge. It is no accident that virologists have played major roles within the biological revolutions of the last century. Viral gene products engage all the key nodes of biology, starting from the atomic to the organismal, and thus function ideal tools to dissect the foremost intricate life processes. Our joys and challenges are to spot and understand these biological nodes and extrapolate from this information how viruses replicate, disseminate, and sometimes cause disease. We can say with certainty that virology in the 21st century will continue to prosper. We discuss several general forces driving the longer term of our discipline: technology development, public health, information science , and, of course, personal curiosity. Perhaps more importantly, to ensure maximal scientific return we must continue to give imagination and serendipity a chance.
