The operation in which the rectum is suspended to its normal position in pelvis so that it no longer protrudes through anus, in order to repair a rectal prolapse is called as Rectopexy. Generally stitches are made to secure the rectum along with the mesh to protect it. This operation is done laparoscopically under general anaesthesia and surgery usually lasts around for 90 minutes. A small cut below the belly button through which laparoscope (long and thin camera) enters inside the body and three small incisions are made on your lower abdomen during this surgery. Rectum folds on itself and protrudes through anal canal in this particular case thus causing a problem for bowel discharge where it comes out through anus instead of rectum.
