Toxicology is a subspecialty of toxicology dealing with the bedside management of poisoned patients, including definitive toxicological diagnosis, assessment of immediate severity and long-term prognosis, and selection of treatments including antidotes. Knowledge of potential drug and chemical hazards allows a clinical toxicologist to participate in the preparedness for and prevention of chemical intoxications. Toxicants are a major cause of clinical disease. Therefore clinical toxicology is part of internal medicine, strongly benefiting from other medical specialties. Clinical toxicology requires having a strong basis in pharmacology. However, while pharmacology deals with thousands of substances, a clinical toxicologist may deal with tens of thousands of substances. Therefore clinical toxicology has developed its own subdisciplines, including the newest one, toxicodynetics. Close relationships between clinical toxicologists and toxicological scientists are essential for improving recognition, prevention, and treatment of intoxications. Indeed putative intoxications need clarification of the mechanism of toxicity for a definitive diagnosis. Antidotes are nothing but the reward of knowing precisely the pathophysiology of a poisoning event.
