Pharmacology is a branch of pharmaceutical science interested in the study of the action of drugs or drugs, where a drug can be broadly or narrowly defined as any artificial, natural or endogenous molecule (from the inside of the body) which exerts a biochemical action or physiological effect on the cell, tissue, organ or organism (sometimes the word pharmacon is used as a term to include these endogenous and exogenous bioactive species). More specifically, it is the study of interactions that occur between a living organism and chemicals that affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. If the substances have medicinal properties, they are considered to be pharmaceutical products Often confused with pharmacy, pharmacology is a discipline distinct from the health sciences. Pharmacology is the study of how a drug affects a biological system and how the body responds to the drug. The discipline encompasses the sources, chemical properties, biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs. These effects can be therapeutic or toxic, depending on many factors. Pharmacologists are often interested in therapy, which focuses on the effects of drugs and other chemicals that minimize disease, or toxicology, which involves studying the unwanted or toxic effects of drugs and other chemicals. Toxicology can refer to both drugs used in the treatment of diseases and chemicals that may be present in domestic, environmental or industrial hazards.
