Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteomes, a set of proteins produced in an organism, system, or biological context. Proteomics relies on three basic technological cornerstones that include a method to fractionate complex protein or peptide mixtures, MS to acquire the data essential to identify individual proteins, and bioinformatics to analyse and assemble the MS data. Present proteomics benefits from the ability to assess the modification state of proteins directly, using a combination of techniques like mass spectrometry, western blotting and enrichment. The proteome of a cell is of considerably greater complexity than the genome. Proteomics is used to detect protein expression patterns at a given time in response to a specific stimulus, as well as to determine functional protein networks that exist at the level of the cell, tissue, or the whole organism. Interaction proteomics is analysis of protein interactions from scales of binary interactions to proteome or network wide. Most proteins function via protein–protein interactions, and one goal of interaction proteomics is to recognize binary protein interactions, protein complexes, and interactomes.
