Rhizoctonia Solani

Rhizoctonia solani is a plant pathogenic fungus with a wide host range and worldwide distribution. The pathogen is known to cause serious plant losses by attacking primarily the roots and lower stems of plants. Many plants besides bean are attacked by this pathogen. The pathogen is known to prefer warm, wet weather, and outbreaks typically occur in the early summer months. This pathogen survives in soil within diseased host material or as sclerotia. This fungus causes a variety of symptoms including damping off, stem lesions, stem rot, root rot, crown rot, and aerial web blighting. Infection causes wilting, stunting and possibly plant death. Good sanitation practices are more important to minimize this disease.  Rhizoctonia solani tend to be more prevalent on stressed or wounded plants. Severely affected plants should be removed promptly.
