Photoacoustic Imaging

Photoacoustic imaging (optoacoustic imaging) is a modality of biomedical imagery based on the photoacoustic effect. In photoacoustic imaging, non-ionizing laser pulses are transmitted into biological tissues (the technique is referred to as thermoacoustic imagery when radio frequency pulses are used). Some of the energy supplied will be absorbed and converted to heat, resulting in transient thermoelastic expansion and thus ultrasonic wideband (i.e. MHz) emission. The ultrasonic waves produced are detected by ultrasonic transducers and then analyzed for image production. Optical absorption is known to be closely associated with physiological properties such as concentration of hemoglobin, and saturation of oxygen. Consequently, the magnitude of the ultrasonic emission , which is proportional to the deposition of local energy, reveals a physiologically specific contrast of optical absorption. Can then form 2D or 3D images of the targeted areas
