Pharmacoepidemiology benefits from the methodology developed in general epidemiology, and can refine it further for methodology applications specific to pharmacoepidemiology needs. There are also other fields that are completely unique to pharmacoepidemiology, for example pharmacovigilance. Pharmacovigilance is a type of continuous monitoring of undesirable effects and other drug safety-related aspects that are already placed in the growing integration markets. In practice, pharmacovigilance refers almost exclusively to spontaneous reporting systems which enable the central agency to report adverse drug reactions to health care professionals and others. The central organization puts together information from multiple outlets to create a more detailed profile for drug products than could be achieved on the basis of information from fewer health care practitioners. Pharmacoepidemiology is the analysis of medication uses and consequences in well specified populations. Pharmacoepidemiology borrows from both pharmacology and epidemiology to achieve this research. Pharmacoepidemiology thus forms the link between both pharmacology and epidemiology. Pharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs and the study of the effects of drugs on clinical humans.
