Proteomics is the study of proteins on a large scale. Proteins are vital parts of living organisms, with many functions. The proteome is the whole set of proteins that an organism or system produces or modificates. Proteomics has made it possible to classify ever growing protein counts. This varies with the time and particular conditions that a cell or organism undergoes, or stresses that. Proteomics is an interdisciplinary discipline which has greatly benefited from the genetic knowledge of various genome projects, including the Human Genome Project. Proteomics is the next step in the study of biological systems, after genomics and transcriptomics. It's more complicated than genomics, because the genome of an organism is more or less constant, whereas proteomes vary from cell to cell and occasionally.
