Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health problem despite the availability of effective drug therapies and efforts to reduce its incidence. Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death worldwide due to an infectious disease behind the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Tuberculosis is caused by the infectious bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which mainly affects the lungs. There are two forms of tuberculosis: latent tuberculosis infection (ITL) and active tuberculosis. In ITL, organisms do not reproduce and the infected person has no symptoms of the infection. Active TB is seen when the body replicates slowly inside the host cells. Patients present with signs and symptoms of infection during active TB. M. tuberculosis is capable of developing intracellularly in the host cell and of inducing drug tolerance induced by macrophages to agents having anti-tuberculosis activity.
