Jute Fabrics

Jute is a long, soft, shiny fiber which can be spun into rough, strong threads. The jute fabrics are made from fiber comes from the stem and outer skin of the jute plant. The fibers are extracted by retting process. The process involves bundling jute stems together and submerging them in slow running water. After the retting process, stripping takes place. In the stripping process, non-fibrous matter is cleared off, then the fibers are collected within the jute stem. Jute may be the name  of either plant or fiber used to make burlap, hessian or gunny cloth. Jute is one of the most inexpensive natural fibers, and next only to cotton in the amount produced and variety of uses. Jute fibers are composed essentially of the plant materials cellulose and lignin.
