Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering, application of the concepts of engineering and of scientific management methods to sustain a high degree of efficiency at optimum expense in industrial enterprises. Due to the complexity of most manufacturing processes and the added responsibility of preparation, scheduling, and organization, the managers responsible for industrial development need a tremendous amount of assistance and support. Historically this support has been provided by industrial engineers whose main concern has been with methods, standards, and process technology organization. Their work has expanded to include the development of work methods to increase efficiency and eliminate worker fatigue; the redesign and standardization of manufacturing processes and methods for handling and transporting materials; the development of manufacturing planning and control procedures; and the establishment and maintenance of worker and machine output standards. Today the field is characterized by an emphasis on computer and mathematical modeling. Industrial engineering has greatly grown as a discipline in recent years, and the assistance it now offers to manufacturing and production managers comes from personnel specialists drawn not just from industrial engineering but also from organizational analysis, management science, computer technology , and information systems.
