HIV Disclosure

It is important that you and your partner get tested for HIV before you have sex and that you talk about your results so that you can take steps to stay healthy. You might consider getting tested together. Make sure you know what your test result means so that you can share this information with your sexual partner.
If the result of your HIV test shows that you do not have HIV, remember that it only means that you are HIV negative until the next potential exposure to HIV. Whenever you have potential exposure to HIV, you could get HIV. In addition, there is a window period, which is the time between when a person becomes infected with HIV and when most HIV tests will show that a person has HIV. This is why it is important to be tested regularly if you have potential exposure to HIV.
If your HIV test result is positive, you will need to have a follow-up test to make sure you have HIV. If you find out that you have HIV, the most important thing you can do is take antiretroviral therapy (ART) the right way, every day. ART is recommended for all people living with HIV, regardless of the duration of their infection or their state of health. Effective treatment reduces the amount of HIV (viral load) in your body. If taken the right way, ART every day can keep HIV-positive people healthy for many years and greatly reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to an HIV-negative sex partner or addict.
