Genomic medicine is transforming Medicine’s future rapidly. Genomic medicine is an interdisciplinary medical discipline involving the use of genomic knowledge that has evolved exponentially since the Human Genome Project (HGP) was completed more than a decade ago. It is estimated that humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes, which are the smallest inherited units. Human beings have two copies of each gene which inherits one from each parent. The human genome contains both genes encoding proteins and genes encoding non-proteins. Precision medicines, Clustered Frequently Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR), genetic testing, gene therapy are some notable advancements or achievements in genomic medicine. Genomic medicine is progressing very quickly, so fast that some health care professionals lack an awareness of the ethical, legal, and social ramifications that can impact how they practice medicine and exchange knowledge with their patients in the future. Librarians may play an important role in bridging the difference in information.
