The gene pool refers to the total number of genes for each individual in a population. It generally involves a particular species within a population. Determining the genetic heritage is important for analyzing the genetic diversity of a population. The more genetically diverse a population, the better the chances of acquiring traits that improve biological form and survival.
The collection of all sets of genes and its genetic information from a population of a particular species is called a gene pool. A great genetic diversity can be observed in a large genetic pool. Epigenetic changes play an important role in the pathogenesis of gliomas and have the potential to become clinically useful biomarkers. The aim of our study was to evaluate the methylation profile of the promoter of the RASSF1, MGMT, PTEN and SOCS3 genes according to their expected diagnostic and / or prognostic value. Pyrosequencing (PSQ) was used to assess the methylation status of the RASSF1A, MGMT, PTEN and SOCS3 genes in a subset of 40 glioma tumors of different grades. RASSF1A was most often methylated (p <0.05), while SOCS3 was methylated to a lesser extent. The methylation status of RASSF1 was not correlated with the tumor grade of the patients. There were no statistically significant differences between the healthy control and the patients with respect to the methylation levels of the MGMT promoter and PTEN. Our results suggest that the RASSF1A gene could serve as an epigenetic biomarker in the glioma. It also gives us an overview of future medical therapy for glioma with a demethylating agent.
