Eicosanoids

Eicosanoids is a class of compounds derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids which are involved in cellular activity. They are signalling molecules made by the enzymatic or non-enzymatic oxidation of arachidonic acid or other polyunsaturated fatty acids that are, similar to arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins are one example of important class of fatty acids called eicosanoids. Its function in diverse physiological systems and pathological processes such as inhibiting inflammation, allergy, fever and other immune responses, regulating the abortion of pregnancy and normal childbirth, contributing to the regulating cell growth, perception of pain, controlling blood pressure. The large number of known eicosanoids are divided into four distinct families they are prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes.
