Caseous Lymphadenitis

Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, which affects the lymph system and leads to abscesses in the lymph nodes and internal organs. It is found mostly in sheep and goats, and has no cure at the moment. This disease is widely spread worldwide. CLA causes significant economic damage, as it is important to condemn skins and carcasses. CLA seriously affects the efficiency of reproduction, the production of wool, meat and milk. One of the largest meat and wool producers especially in Australia. Studies have recorded CL incidence as high as 30 per cent in commercial goat herds. It often manifests itself in the form of huge, pus-filled cysts on the back, sides and udders of goats and sheep. Abscesses can grow on internal organs, too. An abscess can either develop at the place where the bacteria enter the body or at a nearby lymph node.
