A Carbon Nanotube is a carbon tube-shaped material, with a nanometer-scale diameter measurement. A nanometer is one-billionth of a metre, or about ten-thousandth of a human hair's thickness. The graphite layer looks like a roll-up chicken wire at the hexagonal apexes, with a unbroken mesh of hexagonal and carbon molecules. Carbon nanotubes have many structures which differ in length, thickness and helicity form and number of layers. Although they are essentially formed from the same graphite sheet, their electrical characteristics vary depending on these variations, acting as either metals or semiconductors.
Carbon nanotubes are often referred to as single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with diameters within nanometer range.
