Biomineralogy is an intrinsically interdisciplinary activity. This is largely due to the fact that the techniques used to study a given (bio) mineral should ideally be combined with techniques that provide insight into the biological mechanisms that form that mineral (and vice versa). We observe two major challenges that prevent a fluid exchange of ideas and information between mineralogists / materials scientists and biologists. First, the multitude of emerging and prompt revolving methods available to mineralogists and biologists make it tough not only for an specialist to remain contemporary, but can be confusing for the non-expert. Secondly, it is not trivial to integrate and truly link a specific biological insight into the genesis of a biomineral, with the effect that this insight has on the properties of the mineral itself. We propose that an approach to evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) can not only meet this challenge, but also provide an in-depth insight into the evolution of the rich diversity of metazoan mineralized structures. While an evo-devo approach to biomineralogy has previously been used by some groups, the present exciting methodological developments available to the molecular biologist are now making this strategy even more attractive. In this the expert focused to describe our perception of the role that evo-devo can play in the field of biomineralogy, taking as a case study past achievements, recent perspectives and certain future directions of research associated with formation of gastropod shells.
