Acute Respiratory Infections

An acute respiratory infection is an infection that can interfere with normal breathing. This can affect only your upper respiratory system, which starts at your sinuses and ends at your vocal cords, or just your lower respiratory system, which starts at your vocal cords and ends at your lungs. This infection is especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with immune system disorders. It is almost impossible to avoid viruses and bacteria, but certain risk factors increase your chances of developing an acute respiratory infection. The immune systems of children and older adults are more likely to be affected by viruses. Children are particularly at risk because of their constant contact with other children who may be carrying the virus. Children often do not wash their hands regularly. They are also more likely to rub their eyes and put their fingers in their mouths, which results in the spread of viruses.
