Biography

He is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. He received BS in Biotechnology from Ajou University (Korea), MS in Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University and PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh (Dissertation title: A novel inhibitory pathway linking profilin-1 and breast cancer cell motility). After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania (Research work: The role of extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness-mediated mechanosensing on cell cycling), he began his independent academic career at the University at Buffalo State University of New York. His work has focused on the rapidly growing area of cell mechanics and mechanotransduction. He has been particularly interested in understanding the effect of changing(ECM) stiffness because many pathological microenvironments, such as those seen in tumors and cardiovascular disease, are stiffer than their physiological counterparts. He has shown that a stiff ECM contributes to pathological behaviors such as increased migration and proliferation. His areas of biomechanical expertise include atomic force microscopy of cells and the use of bioengineered hydrogels to model tissue stiffness in vitro.
