Dr. Sudan completed his pre-medical education at Delhi University in Delhi, India in 1975, he then was selected to join the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India. Soon after training, 1979, he left India and went to Nigeria to serve as a medical officer in a community medical center. Upon completing his commitment in Nigeria, Dr. Sudan immigrated to the United States.
Dr. Sudan trained with Nobel Prize nominee, Dr. Leland Clark at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati. As a Fellow in Neurophysiology, he was involved in the development of in vivo glucose sensors. Dr. Sudan then pursued a residency in Psychiatry and completed his training in Adult Psychiatry at Wright State University (WSU) in Dayton, Ohio and subsequently in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Sudan then began his residency in General Surgery at Wright State University.
After residency, Dr. Sudan decided to specialize in Bariatric Surgery as this field combines the technical expertise of surgery with many elements of psychiatry. He developed a Bariatric Surgery program at the University of Nebraska and later at Creighton University Medical Center which has become the flagship for the hospital. His area of special interest is the application of the da Vinci robotic system to complex surgical procedures. Dr. Sudan performed the first bowel resection robotically in 2000 and that same year performed the first duodenal switch using the da Vinci system. He now has the largest series of robotically performed bilio pancreatic diversion with the duodenal switch. This operation results in faster resolution of diabetes than the roux en y gastric bypass. He has also demonstrated the feasibility of complex urologic procedures robotically such as total cystoprostatectomy with ileal conduit. These techniques have been published and he has given several national presentations.
Education is a passion of Dr. Sudan’s. He briefly served as the Clerkship Director and Associate Program Director for Psychiatry at Wright State University. During his tenure at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sudan was the Director of the Bariatric Fellowship Program, Director of the General Surgery Residency Program and Associate Chair of Medical Education.
In 2008, Dr. Sudan joined the faculty at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina as Associate Professor of Surgery and Psychiatry, Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Surgery, Medical Director, Surgical Grand Rounds, and Medical Director, Surgical Education Activities Laboratory.
