Biography

Since my graduation from VCU, I have been accepted as a postdoctoral associate in Dr. Damien Pease’s lab at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, University of Miami School of Medicine. I have examined the pathological changes of spinal cord injury (SCI), as well as evaluated the potential therapeutic value of hypothermia and Schwann cell transplantation in experimental animal models of cervical SCI. My current research findings were presented in the Miami 2014 Winter Symposium, the Military Health System Research Symposium (2014, Ft. Lauderdale, FL), and in the 2015 National Neurotrauma Symposium (Santa Fe, NM). I was the only person from the University of Miami who was awarded a travel grant to attend the 2015 National Neurotrauma Symposium. I have also published a paper focusing on the role of hypothermia in SCI in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Wang et al., 2015).

Research Interest

My interest in neuroscience originated from my Ph.D. training in the Neuroscience program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). I commenced my graduate training at VCU under the mentorship of Dr. John Povlishock investigating traumatic brain injury (TBI). The findings of my graduate work have been published in the Journal of Neurotrauma (Wang et al., 2011) and Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology (Wang et al., 2013), which was presented at the 2009-2013 annual National Neurotrauma Symposium. The importance of my research work was recognized by the Michael Goldberger Award (the first prize in the students’ poster competition) at the 28th Annual National Neurotrauma Symposium (2010, Las Vegas).
