Biography

Valeria Guarrasi received her MSc degree in Food Science and Technology in 2005 from the University of Catania, Italy. She also received her PhD in Mediterranean Fruticulture in 2012 from University of Palermo, Italy. During the PhD she worked on Electronic Olfactory Systems (E-nose) to evaluate loquat, mango, apple, grapefruit, quince and kaki fruits quality. In 2011 she was visiting fellow at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of Materials, Environment and Energy, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, working on the shelf life of grapefruit juices using E-nose instruments, in collaboration with Dr. Martin Negri’s group. During the same year she was also visiting fellow at Electronic Engineering, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, working on the volatile component of the persimmon and quince using a different kind of E-nose instrument, in collaboration with Dr. Eduardo Garcia Breijo’s group. She is currently working at the Institute of Biophysics at Palermo, National Research Council of Italy, developing a new electronic nose system. Her current research concerns the development of methods for the extraction of natural molecules having biological activities against self-organization of amyloid proteins responsible of the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.
