Biography

P.Gouma A is a full Professor in Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the State University of New York in Stony Brook, and the Director of the Center for Nanomaterials and Sensor Development (CNSD). I was hired in the rank of Assistant Professor in September 2000 and received early promotion in 2005. During my tenure at Stony Brook I established a new program on Sensor Nanotechnology in my department and an Interdisciplinary Research Center (CNSD) -the latter with NSF funding.

Research activities involve the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials (encompassing ceramic oxides, natural polymers, their composites, and their hybrids with biomolecules, such as enzymes and peptides) for bio-/chemical sensors and biotechnology as well as the development of artificial olfaction systems (breath analyzers, electronic noses and tongues). I secured funds from external sources (federal, state, and private) to support a variety of research projects and equipped my laboratory and the Center with state-of-the-art facilities for nanoscale materials processing and manufacturing (electrospinning instrumentation, precision sputtering systems, ion beam deposition chambers), for chemical and structural characterization (portable gas chromatograph, UV-Vis spectrometer, TEM heating stage, etc.), for sensing property assessment (gas flow benches, electronic nose chambers, controlled humidity set-up, biosensor testing stations) and for microelectronics processing (e.g. microbonding systems). By interacting strongly with the NYS Centers for Excellence and the College of Health Sciences I established novel and highly successful programs on nanomedicine, including developing and characterizing materials for biosensing applications suitable for non-invasive diagnostic purposes ("band-aid"-type sweat test) and 3D tissue scaffolding. Several patents have been granted and many others are pending currently.
