I am Daudi Joachim Msangameno. I work as a lecturer-cum-research scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) (University of Dar es salaam) which is located on Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. I have a BSc in biology and geography; MSc in Natural resources management; and a PhD in marine benthic ecology. My current main areas of research are the community ecology of benthic intertidal habitats; invertebrate ecology and fisheries; coastal zone management; and ocean data management. As you can see I have continually been challenging myself with ever-changing lines of research. In the same spirit I am now embarking on cetacean research, an area with huge research potential in Tanzania, but which has been given little research attention, due to limited expertise and resources. I hope my participation in this CETASMUS internship will enable me gain the necessary knowledge and skills in cetacean assessment and monitoring; this will be of great benefit for me personally, and more important for my Institution (IMS) in its bid to establish itself as one of the regional centres of excellence in cetacean research.
