Biography

Mr. Alagi Yorro Jallow is the co-proprietor and founding managing editor, the Independent newspaper, in the tiny West African state of The Gambia in 1999 after serving as a correspondent for a number of years with the British Broadcasting Corporation. Since his journalism career began in 1987, Jallow has also worked as a correspondent for the International Press Institute and as a consultant to the London based free-expression organization Article 19. Jallow’s media experience has spanned more than two decades. He has worked in newspapers, magazines and radio (as a BBC correspondent) and as a trainer in mainstream and community media. His services as a trustee in many media-related organizations and his decade of involvement in the Gambia Press Union, All Africa Editors Forum, and International Press Institute have provided him widespread recognition in his field. He was Reagan/Fascell Democracy fellow with the National Endowment for Democracy based in Washington D.C He is widely known and respected for his research, presentations and journalism, allow won the International Press Freedom Award in 2005 awarded by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression Jallow is winner of the Hellman/Hammet Award for persecuted writers twice administered by Human Rights Watch twice 2000/2004. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Nieman Foundation for Journalism in 2006-07. Jallow also became an Edward S. Mason Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, a program in public policy and management, in 2008.He has a Master’s degree in Public Administration at Harvard University. He is currently a full time lecturer at the Department of Martin de Tours School of Management and Economics at Assumption University, Bangkok Thailand
