Introduction: This study investigates the impact of HIV on heavy and trace metal concentrations in blood.
Methods: Blood samples from 20 HIV/AIDS patients and 20 healthy controls were collected using standard methods. Metal levels (Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn) were measured using the Perkin Elmer Model 306 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.
Results: The analysis revealed significant differences in metal concentrations between the HIV/AIDS group and the healthy group. Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn levels were found to be 28.23%, 2.88%, 2.64%, and 1.92% higher, respectively, in the healthy group compared to the HIV/AIDS group. In the HIV/AIDS group, Mn and Cu showed increased likelihood of life-threatening occurrences, while Fe displayed a lower likelihood, and Zn levels remained within normal distribution. Hematological parameters, including LYM, MID, RBC, MCV, and MCH, displayed lower risks in HIV/ AIDS patients, with WBC showing higher risk. In non-HIV individuals, WBC and MCH had standard distributions, while LYM, MID, NEU, RBC, HGB, PCV, MCV, MCHC, PLT, and PCT had reduced risks.
Conclusion: These findings emphasize the significant alterations in metal concentrations and hematological parameters associated with HIV/ AIDS, suggesting their potential as indicators for disease progression and risk assessment.
