Biography

Wanderley de Souza was born in 1951 in Iguaí, Bahia. Ishmael son de Souza and Arani Santos Souza, is married to Marlene Benchimol teacher with whom he has three children. He attended primary and secondary courses Iguaí when aroused interest in Biological Sciences. Scientific course was held in the part of Bahia Central College in Salvador and finalized in Modern Brazilian Association of Education in Rio de Janeiro. He joined in 1969 at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and from the first year started scientific initiation stage with CNPq scholarship guided by Hertha Meyer and Cezar Antonio Elias. Since then he devoted himself to the study of the Organization Cellular Pathogenic Protozoa. He finished medical school in 1974 and immediately joined the course graduate of the Biophysics Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1976 he defended the "Ultra-structural study of Microtubules in theory Trypanosoma cruzi and Herpetomonas sp . " In 1978 he defended the doctoral thesis "Study Ultra-structural, cytochemical and freeze-fracture of the Cell Surface Trypanosoma cruzi ". Both theses were guided by Hertha Meyer. He never held a formal post-doctoral opting for short periods in Adolfo Martinez-Palomo laboratories of the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico, Keith Porter at the University of Colorado, Keith Vikerman at the University of Glasgow and John Heuser at Washington University, St. Louis, USA. After completing graduate started the guidance of dozens of undergraduate students, 17 Master's theses and 16 doctoral degrees. UFRJ joined the teaching staff as Assistant Professor in 1976 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1981 and Professor in 1993, a position he holds at the time (1996) at the Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1994 he assumed the position of Head Researcher of the Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology of the University. Also he performed administrative activities, and was Deputy Director and Director of the Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho, UFRJ and first Rector of the State University of North Fluminense. He has worked with a number of national and international scientific societies (Brazilian Society of Electron Microscopy, Brazilian Society of Protozoology, Society of Protozoologists, Interamerican Society for Electron Microscopy, American Society for Cell Biology, American Society of Parasitologists) where he held Vice President positions and President. Has been CNPq consultant, FINEP, CAPES, FAPERJ, FAPESP and FAP-DF and served as a member of the editorial board of Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, Journal of Protozoology, Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Biocell, Acta Microscopic and the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz Memories) . Santos received the Young Scientist Award in 1980, the Prize Manuel Noriega Moralez OAS in 1987 and the Health Sendas Award in 1991. The research activity is focused mainly on cell biology studies of pathogenic protozoa and their interaction with the host cell . He is the author of 341 articles in journals with editorial staff and 552 communications to national and international scientific congresses. He is a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences.
