Abstract :

Avocado (Persea Americana Mill) belonging to the family of Lauraceae, is an exotic tropical fruit native to Central America and cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. The pulp of this fruit is consumed due to its high nutritional value and beneficial health effects including the management of hypertension, diabetes, cancer and inflammation; while the epicarp and seed are discarded as waste. Recently, the antimicrobial properties of ethanol and water extracts from avocado residues were described; however, knowledge regarding their ability to restrict the growth of dermal microorganisms (i.e. C. acnes, S. aureus, or S. epidermidis) or modulate the immune response associated with the infection of the sebaceous follicles is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effect of the ethyl acetate extracts from avocado residues [seed (SA) and epicarp (EA)] to propose new therapies to treat acne.
