Abstract :

Telemedicine, telehealth, or e-health is the remote diagnosis and delivery of healthcare using telecommunications technology. This presentation focuses on the importance of technology for the delivery of healthcare in this venue, for the training of professionals, and the future major for undergraduates. The contention is that telehealth is about technology and healthcare, with equal emphasis on both components. The more recent technologies that have been integrated into the field of telehealth are deliberated. Several of the technologies in use for telemedicine today are examined and compared for basic features. Different platforms for training professionals in the field with the tools they incorporate are discussed. A recommendation for the training of professionals is given. As telehealth is integrated into society on a larger scale, universities will begin to offer an undergraduate major in telehealth. The courses that should comprise this major are justified. Potential graduate work and careers in the field are offered.
