Abstract :

The textile industry is one of the oldest and most complex of all industries with production being varied (natural fibers and man-made). So many chemicals were being used in the textile industry which lead to environmental and health problems. In textile water wastes dyes are the main chemicals to be considered as important pollutants. Water pollution is taking place by the discharge of untreated effluent and the of use of toxic chemicals. The increased demand and variations of chemicals used are becoming the major health issues. Evaporated chemicals breathed in or absorbed through our skin may cause an alteration in the physiology and biochemical mechanisms resulting in impairment of important functions like respiration, reproduction, including congenital anomalies. Heavy metals in textile industry products are not biodegradable and accumulate in organs in the body and over time leading to various diseases. Many of the colorants contain organically bound chlorine, which is a known carcinogen. Our case controls studies conducted among people living in the water shade area from leather industries in major area have shown a significant association with different malignancies. In the presentation, specific malignancies identified in the area and their association with some chemicals used in the industry are discussed.
