Abstract :

The purpose of this study was to integrate these six core goals of IPSG in the nursing assessment process as the key role of nurses are assessment whether physical or general but it should focus on patients safety overall. So, if we work on these six IPSG goals we can definitely have a better impact and outcome in terms of patient safety. Patient safety is one of the essential components to consider for the healthcare delivery system. As such, various programs are entered by healthcare institutions to monitor their services including patient safety goals in order to achieve high patient satisfaction rate. One of these programs is called accreditation. Accreditation is an internationally recognized evaluation process used to assess, promote and guarantee efficient and effective quality of patient care and patient safety. This study will provide valuable information regarding the awareness of IPSG and its implementation in the clinical practices in the surgical unit of Aga Khan University Hospital. Awareness and its implementation into clinical setting improved up to 17% after the process of awareness program taken among all the nursing staff. It helps us in the preparation of accreditation process as experienced by the Aga Khan University Hospital has significantly improved 1/3 of patient safety indicators and perception of nursing staffs is correlated with statistical findings. Those findings are supported by international literature also. In a nutshell, following International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) in clinical areas would reduce number of issues, like for staff it would help them to minimize the risk of errors and for patients to decrease their burden of healthcare and acquiring quality of care. This project was very helpful in terms of understanding the limitations of nurses and ways they can overcome it. This would also help the staff to improve the quality and safety of patient care as these are the two integral parts of AKUH Quality and Safety Policy.
