Abstract :

Malignancy of breast has considerable impact on the health of women. The cornerstone to the management of breast cancer is accurate and timely diagnosis, risk stratification and determination of prognosis. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) has been proved to be a rapid, economical and reliable initial investigation in such lumps. The cell block (CB) is a routine procedure in cytopathology that has gained importance because of its pivotal role in diagnosis and ancillary studies. Our study was conducted over a period of 2 years with aim to study and compare the expression of ER, PR and HER2/neu in cell block and tissue block preparation of breast cancer patients with clinically suspected primary and metastatic breast cancer. 52 cases were studied, and it was found that FNA smear, Cell block and Tissue block complement each other’s and play an integral role in diagnostic work up of patients. ER and PR expression in cell block can be used to predict its expression in corresponding tissue block and therefore can be used to triage patients for Tamoxifen therapy and to predict prognosis. However, HER 2/neu expression in cell block cannot be used to predict its expression in corresponding tissue section. The reason for discrepant results in HER2/neu expression between cell block and tissue block may be due to use of ethanol fixation in cell block which alter the expression of HER2/neu.

Dr. Mohd. Talha has completed his MBBS and MD Pathology from Aligarh Muslim University and has been awarded diplomate ship (DipRCPath) in 2021 by Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath), UK. He is working as Senior Resident, Department of Pathology, JN Medical College, AMU, Aligarh. He has published more than 20 papers in reputed journals.
