Abstract :

Statement of the problem: Flooding has become a recurring problem in Edo State, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and severe ecological damage. The impact of flooding on herbal plants, which play a vital role in traditional medicine and local livelihoods, remains poorly understood. The absence of accurate flood mapping systems exacerbates the challenges faced in mitigating flood-induced damage to herbal plant populations. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the effects of flooding on herbal plants and develop a comprehensive flood mapping system for effective disaster preparedness and sustainable herbal plant management. Methodology: The Research adopted the following methods a. Satellite imagery: Acquire high-resolution satellite imagery (e.g., optical or synthetic aperture radar) covering the study area to analyze flood extent and detect changes over time b. Conducting field surveys to assess herbal plant populations in selected flood-prone areas, including species identification, abundance estimation, and health assessments. c. Social surveys and interviews with local communities, traditional healers, and stakeholders to understand the socio-economic importance of herbal plants and adaptive strategies in flood- prone areas. Finding: The findings from this research have contributed to scientific knowledge on the geospatial assessment of floods and their impact on herbal plant populations. Moreover, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers, local communities, and stakeholders in developing effective flood mitigation measures and promoting the sustainable management of herbal plants in Edo State, Nigeria. Conclusion: This study Improved understanding of the impact of flooding on herbal plant populations, including changes in abundance, species composition, health indicators and development of a flood mapping system utilizing remote sensing and GIS techniques to identify vulnerable areas for herbal plant conservation.
